Research

In 1980 Dr. Favaloro created the Laboratory of Research (now the Biomedic Sciences Research Institute) which at that time depended on the Department of Teaching and Research of the Favaloro Foundation and was financed by Dr. Favaloro. At present the Biomedic Sciences Research Institute is part of the Favaloro University (created in 1992). The Basic Science Research Institute of the René G. Favaloro University Foundation has published 137 papers.

Dr. Favaloro's bust is exhibited permanently since January, 1989. Other physicians so honored include: Drs. Claude Beck, Harry Goldblatt, Irvine Page, Mason Sones, Jr., Willem Kolff among others.
  • 1989 Rene Leriche Prize awarded by the International Society of Surgery. "This prestigious distinction is given in recognition of his contributions to cardiac surgery and especially to his pioneering role in the development of coronary artery bypass surgery. This widely accepted vascular reconstructive procedure, which he and his colleagues introduced into clinical practice, has prolonged the lives of countless numbers of patients with coronary arteriosclerosis".
  • 1992 Honoree of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society for his extensive contributions in pioneering cardiovascular surgery and his exceptional educational contributions to that specialty.
  • The Argentine Society of Cardiology paid him homage at the 25th anniversary of the first coronary artery bypass graft. He opened the 19th Argentine Congress of Cardiology with the plenary conference "25 Years of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. Present and Future" (September 1992).
  • Presented the Honorary Lecture of The American Society for Thoracic Surgery in Los Angeles, California (April, 1992).
  • Gifted Teacher Award, granted during the Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology, 1992 (Enclosure 3).
  • The Cleveland Clinic Foundation established the René Favaloro International Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery, 1992.
  • "Konex de Brillante" (shared with Dr. César Milstein) highest annual award on science and technology granted by the Konex Foundation (1993).
  • Honorary Guest of La Matanza National University, Buenos Aires (May 1996).
  • Biennual prize granted by the Severo Vaccaro Foundation in recognition of his outstanding scientific activity, materialized in his achievements and his fruitful work for the public good (May 1997).
  • Earl Bakken Scientific Achievement Award to René G. Favaloro (posthumously). This award, established in 1999 with a grant given by Medtronic, Inc., recognizes members of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons who have made outstanding contributions to the fields that have enhanced the practice of cardiothoracic surgery and the quality of life for patients (2001).

Teaching

Instruction of residents and fellows at the Cleveland Clinic from 1966 through June, 1971 and at the Hospital Privado Güemes (Buenos Aires) from July 1971 to 1992.

At the Cleveland Clinic Dr. Favaloro trained physicians from United States and abroad.

In Buenos Aires Dr. Favaloro established a residency program with regulations and characteristics similar to those of the United States.

More than 450 residents from every single country in Latin America have been trained at the Favaloro Foundation.

Similar programs have been developed in clinical cardiology, non invasive techniques and cardiac catheterization.

Technicians and nurses from Argentina and Latin American have also been trained at the Favaloro Foundation.

Favaloro Foundation Editorial Center (since December, 1993 until 2000). Besides medical editions it published books, magazines and videos aimed at a general public. Among them we can mention "The Health Encyclopedia", a program of preventive medicine published in weekly fascicles.

TV and Video

Dr. Favaloro developed a TV program entitled "The Great Medical Issues" to make known among people the most important information concerning prevention and treatment of diseases.

The Great Medical Issues gained two prizes: Cruz de Plata Esquiú and Santa Clara de Asís Award (1984).

He also developed a series of twenty-four TV programs dedicated to young people on only one theme: DRUGS.

Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) from Argentina awarded Dr. Favaloro with a prize in acknowledgment of his contribution to the dissemination of information on health care (November 1995).

The Library of the Vanderbilt University Medical School, Nashville, Tennessee, recorded Dr. Favaloro's recollections and experiences on the development of the principles of coronary artery bypass at the Cleveland Clinic in the 1960s (a series of videos on pioneer cardiac surgeons of the 1950s and 1960s for the use of future historians, residents and others) (March 1997).

Discovery Channel in Spanish devoted a segment of the program "Ideas e Inventos" (Ideas and Inventions) to the 30 years of coronary artery bypass graft (broadcast on September 10, 1997).

The TV program Praxis of the ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts), the German State-owned TV channel, together with the Department of Video of the Favaloro Foundation broadcast for the first time a live bypass surgery performed by Dr. Rene Favaloro and other modern cardiovascular procedures. It was broadcast in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Argentina (April 8, 1998).

Televisión Educativa Iberoamericana together with the Department of Video of the Favaloro Foundation organized a "Refresher Course on Transcatheter Interventions"broadcast on the Spanish channel TVE consisting of three one-hour recorded classes and one satellite transmission (September-October, 1998).

Postgraduate Courses

At three levels:

For general practitioners, throughout the country, including rural areas.

For cardiologists working in urban areas.

For cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.
"Cardiology for the Consultant" is held every two years for highly qualified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. This meeting lasts one week and has introduced new ideas in the development of postgraduate education.

Besides the regular educational program Dr. Favaloro has participated in congresses in Argentina and all over the world.
