GIFTED
TEACHER AWARD
Rene G. Favaloro, MD, FACC
MR. PRESIDENT: I bring a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology for our coveted Gifted Teacher Award. This creative Master Surgeon has been the torch bearer for the greatest surgical attack, coronary by-pass operations, on the greatest epidemic of our time, coronary artery disease.
Rene Favaloro, by the genius of his multilingual teaching, enhances the excitement of learning to ready and indelible retention. Where there is interest and excitement, there is learning. By articulating pearls of proper use of his surgical techniques for palliating heart disease, he has uncovered the thorns of abuse. Thus scholarly scientific studies of early and late results make each clearer in the light of the other. His spectrum of inventive teaching and its substance in the modern era can only be described as EPOCHAL.
We must not let the brilliance of this jewel in his crown of attainment overshadow the broad halo of this giant's contributions to the betterment of his fellow man.
Rene Favaloro came to this country for further surgical training where, by his diplomacy and selfless leadership, he converted dangerous medical and surgical rivalry into a synergistic triumph of the genius of both.
Here, where he had come to learn, he remained to teach the teachers by whom he had been taught. He extended understanding of medical and surgical therapies to our nation and beyond to the world.
However, his patriotism drew him back to his native Argentina where the need was great and the gradient greater. Soon this genius, surgical example, lectures and research enlightened teachers in both basic and clinical areas in the Western hemisphere and reflected throughout the world. There, perhaps his greatest monument, the Favaloro Institute will soon be opened.
His courage in espousing better government has conquered frightening opposition, even death threats. Never has the power of principle shown such exemplary strength and statesmanship. Beyond this, his human decency has extended to the search for missing persons.
Thus, his humanitarian, teacher, creative surgeon and diplomat, all pro bono publico becomes the Renaissance man whom I bring for our Gifted Teacher Award. Mr. President, I bring Rene Favaloro for this uniquely appropriate Gifted Teacher Award of our College.
